Milton's older houses need a careful clean

Many of Milton's houses are old. Walk around Milton Hill or East Milton and you pass one older Colonial after another, many with plaster walls and original hardwood. They are well built, and they hold dust in spots a newer house does not have. It sits on picture rail and wide baseboards, in the fins of old radiators and on top of built-ins that run nearly to the ceiling.

Old finishes need a lighter hand than new ones. A hardwood floor that has been refinished over the years has less wood left on top. So we clean it damp and never leave water sitting on it. Winter salt ends up on Milton floors

Milton gets a full New England winter, and the roads and sidewalks get salted all season. All of that salt comes inside on boots. It leaves a white film on hardwood and tile. The grit that comes in with it wears at the finish every time someone walks across it. By March the front hall and the kitchen floor can look dull, even in a house that is kept neat.

A dry mop does not lift salt film. It takes a damp clean with a product that cuts the salt, then a dry pass so the floor is not left wet.
