What each season brings into Sharon homes

Much of Sharon sits under trees. Houses are set back on wooded lots, and plenty of streets back onto conservation land and the trails around Moose Hill. In late spring the pines and oaks drop their pollen. It drifts in through window screens and settles as a yellow film on sills and window tracks. On a hard floor it turns gritty underfoot. A dry sweep mostly moves it around, so we wipe it up with damp cloths and vacuum it out of the tracks.

In summer, a lot of Sharon heads to Lake Massapoag. Families spend long afternoons at the town beach and bring a good part of it home on their feet. Sand ends up in the mudroom and ground into the carpet on the stairs. Wet towels and swimsuits get dropped in a pile, and on a humid day a bathroom holds that dampness for hours. That is how mildew starts on grout and along the edge of the tub. We scrub those spots out and sanitize the handles and counters people touch most.

Winter is sand again, this time mixed with road salt. It comes in on boots and dries on the entry floor, and from there it gets carried into the nearest rug. Salt leaves a white haze on hardwood and a stiff, dull patch in carpet. The grit also wears down the floor finish every time someone walks over it. Old and new houses need different cleaning

The older houses around Sharon Center and along the roads leading out of it were built long before anyone owned a vacuum. Many of them have wide pine floorboards with gaps between them, and windows divided into small panes by wooden strips. Dust settles into those gaps and sits on every little window ledge. We work slowly in these houses. Damp cloths go on the old wood instead of a soaking mop, because too much water can lift a finish that old.

Much of the town filled in later, with ranches and split-levels on quiet side streets. They are easy houses to live in, and they collect dirt in the same places every time. Dust packs into the fins of the baseboard heaters. Grit builds up in the track of the sliding door out to the deck. In a split-level the lower floor usually holds the family room and the laundry, so it gets the most foot traffic. A regular cleaning schedule keeps those spots from turning into a weekend project.

The bigger colonials on wooded cul-de-sacs are a different job again. They have more bathrooms and a lot more glass, and the kitchen usually opens straight into the family room. Cooking grease drifts farther in an open plan than most people expect, and it settles on cabinet fronts and light fixtures. These houses do best with a deep cleaning first, then regular maintenance visits. When the house changes hands, a move-in/move-out cleaning covers the inside of the cabinets and closets too.
